For novice astrology students as well as experienced astrologers seeking a holistic look at the foundations of astrology,
this accessible and fascinating study is a must. Readers will be pleased to discover that Astrology and the Evolution of
Consciousness-Volume 1 by Maurice Fernandez is full of down-to-earth examples as well as carefully considered explanations
of the profound spiritual elements behind various astrological concepts. Mapping the evolution of consciousness and the levels
of spiritual development in tandem with fundamental astrology concepts will make this book a long-lasting reference for many readers.
Maurice Fernandez has written this comprehensive book destined to become a classic on the basic building blocks of astrology.
In Astrology and the Evolution of Consciousness-Volume 1, he shares his years of extensive experience and wisdom to do what he does best:
guide us through new depth with sheer clarity.
Maurice Fernandez was inspired to write this book to expose beginners to astrology’s deeper spiritual content right from the start.
Commonly at first, beginners in the field are introduced to the terms, generalized definitions, and the methodology, and only have access
to more meaningful spiritual material much later on. In other circumstances, beginners jump ahead directly to advanced knowledge because
they are drawn to the spiritual essence, but then end up feeling overwhelmed upon realizing they lack a solid foundation.
This purpose of this book is to bridge these gaps and provide practical guidance without compromising depth.
Many intermediary and more advanced astrology practitioners will also find this volume tremendously
insightful as it revisits fundamental concepts in a new and perhaps richer light.
"“Destined to become a cornerstone in the literature of Evolutionary
Astrology, Maurice’s book is a true ‘manual.’ Students and practitioners
will turn to it for years to come, mining its pages for their treasures
of insight into the evolutionary possibilities inherent in specific
astrological configurations.”

Excerpts from the FOREWORD by Robert Blaschke
With his new book, Astrology and the Evolution of Consciousness—Volume One, Maurice Fernandez has crafted a well-written treatise,
designed to teach beginning students of astrology its first principles through a spiritual lens focusing on how to perceive the ultimate alignment
of the soul with Truth.
Maurice has distinguished himself as an author before the age of 40 by aligning his writing with spiritual principles that bring great depth and human
understanding to his readers. He is following a tradition and a lineage of spiritual astrologers that preceded him, including both Jeffrey Green and Dane Rudhyar.
Writing about this sacred knowledge, originally passed down to us from Swami Sri Yukteswar in his book, The Holy Science, and from his direct disciple,
Paramahansa Yogananda, in his book, Autobiography of a Yogi, helps to preserve the important spiritual dimensions of astrology during an era when many
within the younger generation of astrology students are taught as much about the history of astrology as they are about its core spiritual truths.
The value of this teaching approach cannot be overstated.
Readers are presented the spiritual meaning of the four elements, the three modalities, the hemispheres and quadrants of the chart, and
the twelve signs of the Zodiac as fundamental archetypes.
The Luminaries are then delineated by sign, house and aspect as archetypal combinations. Thus, a Pisces Moon, a Moon in the 12th house, or
a Moon aspecting Neptune are shown to have a common evolutionary need and intent.

Excerpts
Chapter One - Explaining Astrology of the Evolution of Consciousness
While all beings may be equal when evolution commences and aim for the same final goal of realizing the Truth,
different paces and evolutionary orientations set people apart. Gaps of consciousness are created as each person
goes through a different sequence of events in the course of his or her evolutionary journey. Time and space are
the cause of this division and necessarily so.
Upon facing existential challenges the person is birthed out of “the womb of innocence,” and this is the
turning point that causes him or her to realize that happiness is not a given. The prospect of pain creates
pressure that forces the development of intelligence through expanding consciousness. As one learns to discriminate
what works from what doesn’t work more of the Truth of life is understood. As innocence decreases consciousness
increases and so does the contrast between the Truth and illusion. When the veil of ignorance is lifted the Truth
emerges, and living in the Truth provides happiness and answers the initial desire for well-being.
Chapter Two - The Language of Astrology
Earth
Earth represents the integration of spirit into matter; consequently, it relates to the phenomenon of gravity which naturally
increases the density of molecules that manifests in form creation. The purpose of matter is crystallization, which brings
tangibility both literally and figuratively; through earth, life’s processes can be measured and evaluated.
Matter, form, and tangibility can only be sustained when they are in harmony with the laws of life; otherwise, they disintegrate.
Only something that works can be materialized and hold over time. Earth exposes us to objective conditions and laws existing beyond
us that we must consider in order to manage things successfully; these conditions and laws are the crystallization of the Truth—that which works. Although the whole Truth and the laws of life are not immediately revealed, earth’s influence provides a point of reference when navigating through life. Boundaries are emphasized through this dynamic revealing the value of accuracy upon proceeding.
As evolution unfolds and change occurs, earth represents the building or maturation process through which one form is built on the
foundation of the previous one. If one stage or form intrinsic to the maturation process is not dependable, everything built on its
reference will crumble. Thus through earth, reliability and credibility are imperative and measured according to what stands the test of time.
Challenges keep testing the consistency of established notions. Accordingly, when earth is involved, continuity and durability are proof of
worth as they reflect the harmonious adaptation to life’s complexity. When something remains reliable and promotes well-being over years or
even centuries, it means that it embodies truthful qualities and thus has great worth. The person gains security when he or she is able to
rely on a concept or a product that has been proven to work and that has stood the test of time, compared to something that did not work
and failed to hold. Over time, structures are established reflecting what is considered valuable and reliable.
Element Combination:
Fire-Earth: Foundation
With an emphasis of fire and earth elements in a chart, autonomy, strength, and creativity is accentuated.
When facing challenges, this type of individual is highly competent and soundly resists attack. Strong, predominantly
self-reliant, self-regulated, and vital, the person is focused on facts and inspired to take action. The pronounced
resourcefulness of this combination promotes constructiveness, reliability, physical endurance, and usually outstanding artistic talent.
However, the potent and distinct sense of personality comes at the expense of compromise and flexibility. Requiring freedom
of action, one is usually not keen on giving in or giving up principles or habits. Compliance and dependence are last resorts
as fire and earth emphasize self-made qualities.
Chapter Five - The Moon in Signs and Houses
Aries Moon
...Aries is oriented toward change and renewal, and when the Moon is involved one aims to totally reorient emotional
needs and attachments. The aspiration for change and renewal usually stems from a reluctance to go back to old patterns
that do not serve the person anymore. But the transition between old and new choices can be lengthy; until older patterns
are completely surmounted the person will keep meeting circumstances that reflect the past and react defensively toward
these situations. For example, the person may have been emotionally invested in unhealthy relationships and now have the
desire to break away from such a past; yet until these past patterns are really foregone, he or she will keep meeting
people who reflect the unhealthy dynamics consequently causing a strong defensive reaction.
Under these influences, emotions are relatively untamed and instinctual, bypassing apparent logic.
They can manifest in spontaneous attractions or repulsions to people or other elements, sometimes without
an apparent tangible reason. However underneath it all, these strong reactions are not random; they are
tied to survival needs, protective instincts, and an aspiration for renewal. Yet the way these reactions
comes across, it can seem as if the person is responding only to immediate gut feelings. Touchiness, fast
emotional infatuation, confrontational expression, excitement, and passionate demonstrations of affection
are examples of such an approach. Generally, emotions are transparent. Through such emotional intensity, a
person has a direct and close connection with life, as if experiencing everything on bare skin. Experiences
are powerfully and immediately processed, providing one with a feeling of being alive and present in each moment.
Chapter Six - The Sun in Signs and Houses
Aries Sun
The creative process accedes one to immortality—when creating something we give life. When facing the fact that
nothing in life is permanent, we defy death through creativity. Knowing that our personal creations carry on after
our passing provides us with a tremendous sense of potency and vitality. This concept first applies to the reproduction
instinct because having children guarantees that life will go on after our death. The Sun represents the battle against
extinction whereby the torch of life must be passed on to keep the flame burning, defying the end of time. Hence the Sun
represents issues related to fertility and one’s lineage.
With the Sun in Aries, in the first house, or in aspect to Mars, a person’s love for life manifests in the
willingness and effort to take personal charge and fight for life against potential threats of oppression or
extinction. Creativity is awakened and emerges like a new sun, vital and potent, ardently piercing its way through
to gain new ground and conquer darkness.
There is an evolutionary need for the person to play an active role in creating and protecting life against contradicting
forces, and to forge one’s way through space and time. Strength is developed by standing up to potential defiance or any
factor that attempts to control or suppress what one is about; the driving force is the impulse to be and emerge victor
against the odds of defeat or death. In some cases, the Sun in these placements describes a memory of having been denied,
disregarded, or stripped of rights, rendering one defensive and protective of justice and freedom of action.
Chapter 8 - The Evolutionary Levels of Consciousness
The First Consensus Stage
The first Consensus stage of consciousness refers to a very primal level of awareness that is essentially collective
and founded on the most basic survival needs. In this stage, a person is a complete extension of the group he or she belongs
to—whether family, clan, tribe, religious stream, or society—and has little sense of individual consciousness. People do not
address each other according to who they actually are as individuals but instead according to their collective identity.
For example, one may be addressed as a Jehovah Witness, a member of the Johnson family, or as someone living in a particular
part of the country. Thus decisions and choices are made according to these more general associations.
The Spiritual Level
...Progressing through the stages of the Spiritual level of consciousness, one aligns personal values and priorities
with the higher Truth. Over time, the gap between what is subjectively desired and what is objectively right decreases.
For example, service is put before pleasure, and yet as one evolves through this state, service becomes pleasure.
Using another example, one may understand that it is beneficial to meditate at the crack of dawn when vibrations are
in a purer state. Initially, the commitment to such a practice is perceived as important despite the sacrifice of sleep
because spiritual development is prioritized over personal comfort. Yet over time, waking up in the early morning to
meditate ceases to be a routine that requires discipline because it now provides one with tremendous fulfillment and pleasure;
discipline is no longer required in order to be able to do the right thing. As the ego becomes better aligned with higher principles,
less internal resistance is experienced and doing the right thing becomes less of an effort; this is the essence of
spiritual development—consciousness shifts from personal wants to harmonizing with life.
